It is critical to take the time to put the clues together and consider the whole patient, not just a tooth or a mouth or a head. We are One Whole. Our heart pumps blood to our mouths, and from our mouths back through our whole body. Our jaws are intrinsically related to our skeleton, and they can affect each other with positioning, posture, and function. Medications we take don’t only affect the intended target - they have a cascading effect on our whole system. Systemic diseases have distinctive features in the mouth and our daily habits effect the diagnosis, course and treatment of any pathology. It is our challenge to consider the whole patient in order to correctly diagnose and treat!
